A popular option= Self-employment; says survey
According to the latest survey from Kelly Services (global workforce solutions leader); one-in-six respondents describing themselves as ‘self-employed’ and more than half expressing their desire to work more independently.
Most of them are the generation of home-grown entrepreneurs. The respondent are approximately of 134,000 people where self-employed in the survey are made up of 23% baby boomers (aged 48-65), 18% Gen Y (aged 18-29) and 13% Gen X (aged 30-47).
The preferable of self-employment are because of the uncertainty about income, risk of failure, and lack of support.
“Many of those who lost their jobs as a result of the global economic crisis are reinventing themselves as independent contractors, freelancers and consultants. Today, more people are taking charge of their own careers and view self-employment as a way of achieving personal and professional success.” Said Melissa Norman from Kelly Services.
The industries with the greatest concentration of self-employed workers were education, travel and leisure, business services, and engineering.
She add (Melissa Norman), “Our survey results indicate an increase in the number of people who are either engaged in or are planning some form of entrepreneurial activity. Despite uncertainty, the idea of moving out of the traditional employment relationship is appealing to those who want the flexibility of working for themselves.”
